1904 Falls in Midweek Match at Cal United
San Diego 1904 FC fell this Wednesday night at Irvine’s Championship Stadium at Great Park against the Cal United Strikers, with the Orange County side holding to the three points in dispute with a score of 3-0.
San Diego kicked off the match with some notable absences from its starting lineup compared to the last three games, with first-choice goalie Jean Antoine (21), defender Josiah Benjamin (5), and midfielder Billy Garton (19) out of action. In their stead were second string keeper Marcus Norris (1), Alexis Velela (2), and Brandon Zambrano (14). The latter two players have been key substitutions in previous games.
At the fourth minute of play, Cal United’s Christian Thierjung received a long ball and opened the score after a one-on-one play against Norris. The score would remain throughout the gridlocked first half of the contest.
Andy Contreras doubled the lead for the Strikers 58 minutes in, having come off the bench at the 57th minute of play. Gustavo Villalobos locked in the win for the home team in the first minute of stoppage.
This result puts 1904 FC at a 2-0-2 record and in second place in the West Coast standings, behind Cal United which has played one more match.
