1904 FC Opens Season against Stumptown Athletic

Posted in

After 90 minutes in 40-degree weather, San Diego 1904 FC kicked off the 2020 NISA Spring season with a 2-2 on the road at Stumptown Athletic’s home turf in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The hard-fought contest began with both teams trying to take possession of the ball in the first minutes.

Four minutes from the starting whistle, Stumptown took the lead with a free kick taken by the home side flew over San Diego’s four-man wall and into the back of the net.

At the 35th minute, 1904 newcomer Joseph Perez (29) set off the dominoes in what would be 1904’s first season goal. He controlled a clearance from Stumptown’s keeper and found Moe Espinoza (10), who put a through ball to midfielder Christian Enriquez (8). A cross from Enriquez into the six-yard box found Perez who scored. The joint effort resulted in the equalizer for San Diego.

Six minutes later, Stumptown added a goal to their count off a play coming from the left wing to put the boards 2-1 at halftime for the home team.

The second half was one full of heart and risk. 1904 fought to find more chances and found more fluidity in their game. Despite the efforts the score would remain.

However, Ozzie Ramos (4) converted a free kick at the 81st minute to put San Diego within distance. His shot bounced in front of Stumptown’s goalie and made its way past the line for the 2-2.

With a few minutes left 1904 had a chance and another free kick to lay claim to the three points in play, but, at the final whistle, the 2-2 tie would hold.

The next contest will bring 1904 FC back home to Lincoln High School for our home opener on March 8. Tickets are available online.
