1904 FC Begins February with Busy Weekend

Posted in

Less than a month from our NISA Spring 2020 road opener against Stumptown Athletic on Feb. 29, San Diego 1904 FC played two preseason matches on Saturday and Sunday ahead of the upcoming league competition.

Saturday’s match, at the Lake Forest Sports Complex in Orange County, saw 1904 FC face off against the UPSL’s Santa Ana Winds, yielding a 1-0 win for San Diego. Forward Hanif Wright scored the only goal of the match during the first half.

1904 FC midfielder Jesse Vogel left early in the second half after suffering a shoulder injury which required immediate attention. Medical staff stated he is expected to return to action after a week of rest.

This was the second time the two teams have met on the field. With 1904 FC drawing against the Santaneros last August with a 1-1 score at Los Angeles Harbor College. Nelson Flores Blanco scored San Diego’s equalizer from a free kick near the end of the encounter in 2019.

On Sunday night, the black and white took to the pitch at Monte Vista High School once more, now facing off against SD Premier SC, which also competes in the UPSL. 1904 FC won its second match the weekend with a 3-0 score.

Once again, Hanif Wright opened the score for 1904 FC, this time after team captain Ozzie Ramos found the opening for an assist from midfield. An own goal by SD Premier doubled the deficit, and a shot by 1904’s Brandon Zambrano set the final score of the night at 3-0.

With a few weeks before the club sets off on the quest for the NISA Spring 2020 championship, 1904 FC will return to training this Tuesday after a well deserved day off.
